The Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec)

The Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec) is the only pure play information and cyber security institution to have been granted Royal Charter status and is dedicated to raising the standard of professionalism in information and cyber security. CIISec provide a universally accepted focal point for the information cyber security profession, it is an independent not-for-profit body governed by its members, ensuring standards of professionalism for training, qualifications, operating practices and individuals. CIISec has a growing membership that represents over 10,000 individuals in the information and cyber security industry.

CREST

CREST provides internationally recognised accreditations for organisations and professional level certifications for individuals in penetration testing, cyber incident response, threat intelligence and Security Operations Centre (SOC) services.

British Computer Society

The BCS, also called the Chartered Institute for IT, has over 60,000 members in 150 countries, and a wider community of business leaders, educators, practitioners and policy-makers all committed to their mission.

As a charity with a royal charter, their agenda is to lead the IT industry through its ethical challenges, to support the people who work in the industry, and to make IT good for society.

CompTIA

CompTIA has over 20 years’ experience in delivering certification exams in networking, servers, Linux, security, cloud, mobility and more. Companies with their own certification programmes rely on CompTIA’s exams to provide an industry standard for foundation level skills.

(ISC)²

(ISC)² is an international, non-profit membership association with more than 140,000 certified members. They help members grow and develop through globally recognized certifications, networking and collaboration opportunities and leadership tools.

7Safe

7Safe is an Information Security services firm (part of PA Consulting) with a portfolio of university-accredited computer security and forensic courses and certifications. All training is authored and delivered by practicing consultants, which means they offer relevant real-world educative content.

SANS

Cyber Security Training, Certifications, Degrees and Resources – empowering and educating current and future cybersecurity practitioners around the world with knowledge and skills, through industry-leading community programmes, resources, training, certifications and events. Their Cyber Security Career Roadmap is a good place to start if you’re interested in professional development.

The IET

The Institute of Engineering and Technology – working to engineer a better world. The IET inspires, informs and influences the global engineering community to engineer a better world. They are uniquely placed to champion engineering.

The Cyber Scheme

The Cyber Scheme is a not-for-profit organisation run by people with significant experience in business and the cyber security industry. The Cyber Scheme is contracted to NCSC to provide certification in the penetration testing field. Certifications (team member and team leader)  meet the NCSC assessment standard of technical competence. Cyber Scheme also collaborates with IASME in supporting certification of Cyber Essentials Plus Assessors. Cyber scheme will continue to develop its portfolio of certifications. Collaboration with The Challenge is mutually supportive in terms of provision of a pipeline of talent for training and certification, recruitment and subsequent career choices.

The site IT Online Learning has been recommended to us by Candlefox as a particularly good provider of IT and cyber security training courses. They also function as a recruitment agency for anyone looking for jobs in related sectors.

Courses Online is a hub of e-learning courses, recommended to us by Candlefox, through which learners looking to learn a new skill or improve an existing one can compare the options available. These courses can be studied remotely to fit around a learner’s schedule and are all fully accredited so that they come away with qualifications for their CV.

The Cyber Trust - Useful Resources

The Cyber Trust has assembled some highly relevant resources that may be useful for schools, parents and others with an interest in cyber, internet safety and awareness. This list started during the various COVID lockdown periods in 2020, 2021 and on into 2022 as schools have returned – not least as schools and after-school activities increasingly include cyber security and internet safety into things.  This is not by any means a comprehensive listing and is not limited to cyber, nor is it an endorsement, but things The Cyber Trust has come across or used that they have found helpful and interesting.

UK Cyber Security Council

The UK Cyber Security Council (https://www.ukcybersecuritycouncil.org.uk/) is The Chartered Institute for Cyber Security. There is a great deal of information on its web site, and the sites of all its member organisations.  One current item of interest is their career mapping tool, which will take you through the different knowledge areas within cyber security to assess where your skills or interests currently lie and what specialism would be best suited to you.
